What I learned at 16...and What I know today

I was 16 years old and had just been selected to be a Kansas City Chiefette – a professional NFL cheer leader – a professional dancer.  This was my dream and I was flying high….for about 2 weeks--until the day the squad directors called me over and told me I needed to lose weight. This went on the entire season – I finally asked one day, in tears, what they wanted me to do?  I was at the same weight as when they hired me, so why was I no longer good enough?  They said they just wanted me to lose "one pound" because my butt hung out of my uniform a little too much.
Me - circa 1984
From that day on, at 16 years old, I knew I was fat – after all, experts in judging beauty had told me so.  From that day on, my battle with food, weight, eating disorders and self-esteem began.
I find it interesting, today, that these beauty experts did not offer me any tools or suggestions on what to do.  Therefore, I did the only thing I knew to do – cut back on my eating.  I tried to stay at 500 calories a day – until the days came that I couldn’t take it anymore and, then, I would binge.  Then, with self-loathing, I’d go back to the 500 calories a day.  I learned to fear food.  It was my enemy.

Today, I’m the mother of a 15 year old daughter, and I look back on that young girl, and I shudder to think of my daughter ever feeling that way.  She is a beautiful, healthy, smart, athletic young woman.  And I have always tried to teach her that beauty comes in many shapes and sizes, and that true beauty shines from within herself.  And, that just because someone says something, that doesn’t make it so.
Today, as an adult woman, I have finally found peace with my body.  I went thru a phase where I didn’t do any physical activity and just let my body do its thing. Sure, I gained some pounds, but I learned that, despite not working out and not watching what I ate, my body didn’t blimp up as I had feared.  For many years, this was good enough for me.
It wasn’t until I turned 40 that I started feeling like I wanted something more – I wanted to feel fit and strong!  Today, I am fit and strong – both physically, but even more importantly, mentally.  I enjoy eating and try to balance out daily healthy eating with the occasional splurge.  And I’ve discovered that I love to exercise!  No longer do I do it as a “grudge” activity – today I do it because I feel so good and I know that exercise is a key component to my ability to wake up feeling great every day!
I don’t want anyone to ever have to feel the way I did,no matter what age or weight you are.  Being fit and healthy is something you do for yourself, first and foremost.  From that, there are so many other benefits – for your family, your career, your ability to live your life with purpose.  And there are so many tools available today to aid you in achieving your goals.  Reach out and grab them, ask for them, incorporate them into your life!
When I was 16, I thought it was all about how I looked.
Today, I know differently. Food is not your enemy. Working out is not a “grudge” activity.  Feeling good, being healthy, living your life with optimism and passion – these are all things worth fighting for!
These are all things I know today that I wish I would have known when I was 16.

Deborah's Team Beachbody Challenge!

Are you Ready to Take the Beachbody Challenge?

You've probably seen some of the weight loss challenges I've been hosting these past several months.  Well, starting in November, I'm launching a new and improved challenge!

One of the reasons why Beachbody started the Team Beachbody Coach concept a few years back was to be able to provide personal service, by real people, to Beachbody customers. Beachbody didn't want to just sell you a workout program and send you on your merry way.  They want you to be successful - to get FIT - to get HEALTHY - to have a BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE!

This new challenge will be different because, each month, I will be taking only 5 of you to work with and personally coach.  By keeping the group small, you will have my personal focus and attention every day, and you will get to know the other members in your group in a personal way which will add depth to your support system.

Together, we will commit to our fitness goals, health goals, diet, and stay accountable to one another. We will all be in this together and what is so cool about these challenges is that we will all be doing the SAME THING… We will all be doing the same workout program, drinking shakeology, tracking our progress, staying connected in our private facebook group, etc.

So if you are thinking “well I don’t have shakeology”, then YES what I am saying is you will have to commit to getting on shakeology and drinking it 1x per day. There are other ways to get fit and healthy, to be sure, but I'm a product of the product, and these are the proven methods I've used in my own life to get fit and healthy. This will be a commitment for the 5 people I take in and I want us all to be 100% committed… I plan on giving 110% of myself to YOU to help you reach success and I want you to do the same!

By joining my challenge you will automatically get 1 month FREE of the upgraded Beachbody Club membership (HELLO AWESOME RIGHT?).  This is a great tool to have, as you will get a customizable meal planner that will make reaching your goals even EASIER. Oh, and by the way, another HUGE BONUS is you get 10% off all your Beachbody products by being a Club Member, AND you can enter into CASH drawings each day by tracking your workouts!

Before I recap the exact details I want you to ask yourself these questions….

1. Do you want to get healthy?
2. Do you want to make a permanent life change - get off the yoyo diet merry-go-round?
3. Do you want to look in the mirror and feel GOOD about what you see?
4. Do you want to have energy?
5. Do you want to add years onto your life ?
6. Do you want to set a good example for your children?
7. Do you want to have a more positive attitude?
8. Do you want to build relationships with others going through the same things?
9. Do you want to have more confidence?
10. Do you want to get your life on track and start a new healthy lifestyle?

Remember, it takes 21 days to create a habit, and with this Challenge, you will have others keeping you accountable to see if you did your workout, stayed on track with your diet, and to lift you up when you falter.

So, are you interested? I KNOW YOU ARE! The very first thing you need to do is to go to Beachbody Coach/Debsfitgroove and sign up as a free member so that I am your official Beachbody Coach.

Now, here's the details for Deborah's Beachbody Challenge:

1. DECIDE & COMMIT to joining my Beachbody Challenge
2. Choose the workout program you would like to do (see image below for the options)
3. Choose Chocolate or Greenberry Shakeology
4. Receive CHALLENGE CONFIRMATION email from me with tips on how to track progress, how to measure, recipes, fitness tips, goal setting, how to schedule workouts, how to join our PRIVATE facebook challenge group etc
5. SUCCEED!

The cost of each pack includes a 30 day supply of Shakeology, one of the applicable workout programs of your choice, upgraded Team Beachbody club membership, AND free shipping!  This is a significant savings over purchasing each of these things separately!

For Those Who Hate to Workout!

One could say that I've been physically active all of my life.  I started out in dance lessons when I was in 7.  By high school, I had dreams of being a Broadway star. I spent every day after school at the studio in class, teaching class, or assisting others.

Fast forward to college - I decided I needed to focus on getting a "real" job instead of darting off to Broadway.  I continued to dance, but I also became a certified fitness instructor.  I was always battling that extra 5-10 pounds that dancers are always battling. A large part of why I became a fitness instructor was because it forced me to work out, something I was not really good at motivating my own self to do.

I taught for 15 years and at one point, I was teaching up to 10 classes a week.  I truly loved inspiring others to workout, but to be honest, I didn't really like working out.

So, when I decided to stop teaching and focus on my family and my career, my working out pretty much stopped too.  For many years, I didn't workout at all.   And when we joined the YMCA, I would attend classes for a while, then fall off, then go back, then fall off.

Working out was a chore.   And to tell you the truth, I didn't really see inspiring results.  I managed to get, and maintain, my weight to an OK level, but for the time I would put in, I just kind of looked the same.  I never saw my body progress past a certain level.

So, what has changed in my life?
We went on a cruise recently, and I was reminded of a time when I would not have  considered working out on my vacation. That's what vacations are for, afterall, right?  Taking a "vacation" from work.  I would see others working out on vacation and kind of chuckle to myself - get a life, I would think.

On our recent cruise, I worked out every day.  I imagine some people looked at me and thought - it's a vacation for Pete's sake, take a break. But I actually WANTED to workout.  It felt good.  It made me feel better each day.  It really made me feel like I was on vacation, because now, I could focus on doing the things that I loved doing without other mundane distractions.  Working out had become one of the things that I loved doing.

I have to say, a lot of that change in mindset I owe to Beachbody.  The more results I saw from my workouts, the more inspired I became.  The more Tony Horton and Shaun T and Chalene Johnson that got into my head, the more motivated I became - my workouts truly became the best part of my day.  When I felt tired, beaten down, upset about something at work, I just pushed play, and I was once again reminded that "I can do it", "I'm amazing", "I'm an athlete".

And when I looked in the mirror, I saw true results--results like I'd never seen before, results that I thought could never possibly happen to me - muscle definition, toned abs and arms...cuts and rips became something I could now relate to!  And I found that when I worked out in front of a mirror, I could actually see my muscles as I worked out, which made me want to put that much more into my workout.  I knew that the time I was putting in was paying off!

So, I guess I'm writing this for those of you who say, "I just hate to workout...I want to lose weight, but I hate to workout."  I say to you, if you want to lose weight, you need to learn to love to workout.  And it is possible!  Give it some time - it won't happen over night - just like losing weight doesn't happen over night.
You need to "act as if"...act as if you like to workout. Schedule it on your calendar, get some workout clothes and shoes that you feel good in; "push play" on a regular basis; track your results.  And as you start loving the new you, you will start loving your workouts.  You won't want to miss one.  You will find that, no matter how tired you are, or "not in the mood", once your body feels that first stretch, it's becomes like a "Calgon, take me away" moment.

And while you will lose (weight),you will gain so much more!

The very best part of my today:  I now feel strong - in mind, body and spirit.  I feel powerful, like I can accomplish whatever I set out to accomplish.

I'm telling you, it happened to me, it can happen to you

Workout Variety: It's the Spice to a Fit Life!

As I have mentioned, I've done many of the Beachbody programs - P90X, Insanity, TurboFire, and Chalean Extreme.  I love them all, and what I really love is having all of them at my disposal to mix and mingle so that I can make my own daily blend of a workout program.

Another thing I've started doing is working out with my kids.  They have been going to a sports trainer for about 6 months, and I have to admit, I've been a little bit jealous (I loved my time of working out with a personal trainer).  Their fitness levels have improved dramatically, so I decided I wanted to check out what they were doing.

After day one of the shared workout, I could barely move.  So how can it be that after completing some of the hardest workouts in the business (Tony Horton, Shaun T, etc), and being more physically fit that I've ever been, one little ole workout can turn me into a hobbling mess?

Well, rather than be discouraged by this, I'm actually thrilled!  Have you ever heard of plateaus?  After my first few days of P90X and Insanity, I was so sore - I can remember crawling up the stairs after my first Insanity workout.  But after, 60-90 days of the programs, I was rocking it!

That is where the variety comes in - and that is how variety can knock you off your plateaus!  When I do something different and I feel it the next day, I know I've just taken my body to the next level!

So, I've now done 3 workouts with the kids, and yes, I'm still sore.  I also added in a P90X Kenpo workout on Sunday, which I hadn't done for a while.  That one really made my arms and calves wake up and take notice as well.

When I got out of bed this morning, sure, I was kind of hunched over and walking like a duck with my tight, scrunced up calves, but man alive, I'm excited that I can still up the ante on my fitness levels.
However, I'm thinking today, maybe a good stretch routine would be in order.

What Goes Up Must Come Down!

What goes up, must come down.  That was one of the phrases that kept going thru my head this morning as I was doing a 3 mile run on the backroads at the Lake. The roads are very hilly, and as I chugged up the hills, feeling somewhat like the "Little Engine that Could" I just kept reminding myself that the hills I was running up, I would soon be running down on the way back.

I'm not traditionally a big fan of running, but I've been trying to add some new things to my workouts. As I was running today, I was really listening to my body - sure I was huffing and puffing, but did I really hurt? Could I really keep going?  I found that, while I was a bit uncomfortable, I was definitely not at my max. So I dug deeper and kept on going.

Also, knowing that I can bust throught an Insanity or P90X workout helps me to remind myself that I am STRONG!  I CAN do it!

In addition, I kept thinking of my friends who are runners, as well as the Beachbody community - and I felt inspired just knowing that so many other people are out there trying to be the best physically fit person they can be.

Have a fit and fun day!
